Before the newsletter, please enjoy this original haiku:
Whether rain or shine I maintain one quality Procrastination
Now that we’ve gotten my self-deprecation in poetry form out of the way, let me shed light on my current state…BUSY!
Beyond a day job and writing career, some part of my brain thought it would be a good idea to ramp up teaching this month. I’m spending Saturdays overseeing two classes for the lovely Gotham Writers Workshop, which totals to six-hours of class time (clearly, I know how to rest on a weekend). Moreover, my freelance editing has never been busier. Many thanks to the wonderful clients (some of whom are among you) who allow me to help with their stories. Suffice to say, my life these days is certainly defined by work.
Perhaps this is a good thing. It’s easier to spend my time working than pondering the current state of the world. I remain optimistic about the progress of society, but it would be dishonest to say that I’m not disappointed with the lack of empathy out there for victims of catastrophe and oppression. This is especially true of other authors, folks who I consider colleagues. We must not let the fact that someone is from another part of the world or of a different shade of skin dissuade us from speaking truth to power (sadly, the oppressive power is too often my own government and its allies).
And yet, that is why I write. Never before have I been more certain of the value of books to spread empathy. To change minds and open hearts.
If you are a writer, let that point above be a hopeful message. We need your stories now more than ever. Stories that are written with purpose. And, if you are a reader, thank you for opening your heart to diverse narratives, as I’m sure you do.
….by the way, I am currently reading a wonderful book—Pachinko.
I’m thinking that I might begin to note what I’m reading in these newsletters, if only to hold myself accountable so that I do read. If any of you are looking for a wonderful book, if occasionally heartbreaking, then I would encourage you to check out this one :)
In closing, please don’t be strangers! Continue to reach out and say hello. I’m consistently humbled to be able to count you all among my friends.
